An October Stroll Through A Cemetery

An old New England, country cemetery...

Photobucket

The crunch of fallen leaves under foot at the front gate...

Photobucket

Won't you come along...

Photobucket

Peaceful and haunting...

Photobucket

Stories etched in stone...

Photobucket

A row of monuments, both beautiful and sad...

Photobucket

Stones drapped in colorful lichen and the forest painted in the hues of fall...

Photobucket

A heartbreaking tale of Our Alice, a toddler taken too soon from loving parents in another era, but the pain still reaches across time...

Photobucket

A sudden mist rises across the way by the empty church and chills me to the bone...

Photobucket

All alone on this October stroll. I leave to let the stories rest in peace for a time.

Looks like dreary skies in your photos just as we are having today. I hear rain dripping on the roof right now.

Aren't headstones and cemetery monuments wonderful? Poor 'our Alice'. Wonder what happened to her.

Your gorgeous photos capture New England as do your most poetically chosen words. The cemetery is just right for Halloween too. Shivers….

I've always wanted to walk through and old cemetary. Maybe now I will. :)

I know a lot of people are creeped out by cemeteries, but I think old cemeteries are fascinating. You can learn so much about a place and its people and history from reading tombstones.

Great pictures and words to go along with them :-)

Sara - That is so sweet! Thank you!

Maggie May - Exactly how I feel. They are a great place to spend an afternoon.

Rebecca - Yes. We are still in CT. I think we may stay until the summer after next.

Barrie - Totally! There was definitely an atmosphere to that graveyard.

Adarian - Thank you! You should definitely photgraph graveyards. They are so interesting. I know you could do amazing things with it.

Donna - Thank you so much! I really, really appreciate it.

Kaylynn - Thank you. :)

Erika - Any time! :)

Charlotte - You really should! These old graveyards are a treasure of New England.

Erica - Yes, fall is really the best time to wander around the old cemeteries. Gives them such atmosphere.

Tracy - Thank you! If I remember correctly, little Alice was 18 months when she passed. So sad. I don't know how she died, but found it so heartbreaking to see her simple epitaph. Obviously she was greatly loved.

Perfect Americana. Gorgeous, gorgeous pictures. New England autumn is really the perfect backdrop for a cemetary.

Willow (from Life at Willow Manor) did an interesting piece on grave markers/symbolism this week. You would enjoy it.
