House Hunting in Beantown

Photobucket
Yes, it's true! We're really looking into moving to Boston next year. Well, not in Boston, more like around Boston. I left my heart in Boston the moment I stepped onto the commons when I first moved to New England several years ago.

Connecticut is great. Connecticut is beautiful. It is stunning, but I don't like living so far from a big city. We're smack dab in the middle of New York City and Boston and we're not close enough to either to make a quick run into a city when we feel like it. It has to be planned, and I don't like that.

Boston is oozing with colonial history, which I adore. Plus, you've got Salem nearby and the ocean. Oh, and of course the cape is a stone's throw from the city. I dream of spending my summer and fall days exploring Cape Cod. So, to Boston we will go.

There are, however, many, many suburbs of Boston. And since I'm not a complete city gal (like living country, close to a city), suburbs is where we will be seeking. We took our first house hunting trip last weekend to scope out the south shore area. South shore has got to be my favorite Boston suburb. As the name suggests, it's on the shore. The shoreline runs along Cape Cod bay and Massachusetts bay. So, right off the bat it's gorgeous. The main town in south shore is Plymouth. You know....THE Plymouth...the Plymouth where pilgrims stepped ashore on a very small rock and had the first Thanksgiving.

So, our analysis of Plymouth was this - it's a great town to visit. There's a lot of good ol' American history to gander at there and there are some really beautiful spots, but the town wasn't quite quaint enough for our liking. There was a lot of shopping centers and a few housing developments; those are the things I left behind on the west coast and don't care for. So, even though Plymouth has the most affordable housing in the area, we decided to look at some of the smaller towns in south shore. I don't mind paying more for charming.

We then went 5 miles down the road to Duxbury. Oh, Duxbury. Sweet, sweet Duxbury. How I love thee! I would honestly live in a shack to live in Duxbury. I first went there on a very cold December day a few years ago. Even though it wasn't the most beautiful time of year to go there, I found it breathtaking. The houses are all so adorable with colorful clapboard siding on the front and natural wood shingles on the sides, very New England coastal looking. The town also has beautiful beaches and it is lousy with charm. It's full to brim with quaintness. Love it.

Plus, Duxbury was founded by my ancestors. The first settlers there were Mayflower passangers John Alden and Myles Standish, both of whom I directly descend. Whenever I go to Duxbury my first stop is at the Myles Standish burying ground. This is the oldest cemetery in the United States. If you understand my love of old cemeteries, you'd know why this would be such a draw for me. That would just be the coolest for me to live in the town of the oldest cemetery.

We always stop by and say hello to grandpa Standish.

Photobucket
The kids cannot help but play all over Standish's grave. Those cannons are just too tempting.

Photobucket
Adam checking out the old gravestones.

Of course we also visit grandpa John Alden when we're at the cemetery. My blogger friend, Heidi, is also his granddaughter. Hi cousin! :)

After the cemetery, we explored the real estate of the town and found a couple of great leads. Then we headed to the coast in Duxbury. The more beautiful, sandy beaches are designated for residents or to those who buy a pass.

My people, all in a line, walking to shore.

It was a bit chilling in the evening, so Caroline cuddled with her daddy on the beach.

We then left my beloved Duxbury and headed a little north to Scuitate. One of my friends used to live in south shore and she recommended this town and I'm so glad she did! It's a quaint fishing village and, apparently, has the highest concentration of Irish-Americans in the whole state.

The big surprise of Scuitate was the beautiful lighthouse. I had no idea and I adore lighthouses. I took the picture at the top of this post there.

Photobucket

We got to the lighthouse at sunset. It couldn't have been timed more perfectly. I felt such peace and joy at experiencing the beauty of this place with my family.

Me and my girls.

We will be looking at more Boston suburbs in the coming months, but south shore does have a hold of my heart.

Before we can move, however, we must sell our house. Not looking forward to that. We will be working on home improvements over the year (I'm sure I will be posting pictures) and that should take up most of our extra time and money, but if it gets us there, I don't mind.

I am very, very jealous. I'm drowning in shopping centers and housing developments. Blech.

Longing for the day we retire and can enjoy life in the place of our choosing rather than be tied to a company name...

Lovely family photos!

Boston south shore seems beautiful...and so different from tropical Puerto Rico. Seeing you with your girls is such a treat. Good luck on your house sale and move, Alyson. How fun to return to the land of your ancestors.

Wow! One thing that I miss about living in Connecticut is the quick access to NYC. Living in a small town that's close to a city is really the way to go. I'm sure you'll find lots of great places in the Boston area.

Lovely as usual, Monica....but too close to Salem is a bit dangerous for me. They'd wanna burn me at a stake...

I am so envious! What an exciting, thrilling thing to look forward to. And a knowing a year in advance just adds to the anticipation. I am very happy for you and your family, Alyson!

BTW, I adore that photo of Caroline looking over her Dad's shoulder. What a beautiful expression you've captured :-)

I'm so impressed that you know your heritage so well - and how fascinating that you can trace it all the back to the Mayflower. AND I love Heidi's blog - I had no idea you guys were related!

Happy house hunting, and happy home-improvement doing and house-staging!

Right south of Boston there are some wonderful spots..., Scituate is definitely one of them. As a familiy you might also love Marblehead, north of Boston. Just charming! My husband works in Boston, but we live down in Tiverton, RI by the water.

I always wait anxiously for one of your posts and then get insanely jealous by the wonderful pictures. You've inspired me to find more charm in the west.

Good luck on the house hunt.

I wondered where you have been lately...and to come find out you are going to move near Boston? Wow! Does this mean you will be changing the name of your blog? :) Beautiful pictures and I totally love the Boston area, too. Both my husband and I are BOTH descendants of Mayflower ancestors. Isn't it cool to think all of our ancestors knew each other? It's a small world. BTW, I voted for your blog at Bloggers Choice Awards. Maybe you can do the same for my gardening blog? http://bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/76769/. Take care.

P.S. Thanks for stopping at my blog!

YAY! I am so glad that you will be moving closer! If you are stuck on being close to the beach---I can't help you, but if not, check out the Concord or Acton areas. Great history and fantastic schools!! I mention Acton, as that would be in our ward... :)

Lots of old houses too!
Call me if you come up again for looking! 978dash760dash3397!

Hey, Alyson, you’re back! Yeah! Wow, that move is big news. No wonder you’ve been offline. Lovely photos!

I lived in Cambridge, MA for 12 years and loved it. Mt. Auburn cemetery is stunningly gorgeous, especially in May.

I used to go for long walks in Concord and Lincoln which have a nice rural feel to them – you can’t go wrong with Walden Pond. Definitely check out the Decordova Museum and sculpture garden.

The Cape can get kind of bleak and raw during the winter, although I love being near the sea.

Happy house hunting!

I'm really excited that you guys are planning a move to Mass. next year! Although I will miss you lots if you do go. But at least I'm up in Mass. all the time to visit my family so I know it will be easy to still see each other.

The South Shore definitely sounds right for you. It's worth exploring other areas too (I'm partial to the western suburbs, but that's just because that's where I'm from and I know them well), but it sounds like the shore just might be the place for you. You will love Cape Cod and living near there, if that's what happens. I know you and you will just love it!

That looks like so much fun! Look for a place with an apartment above the garage :)
I like the pic of the lighthouse plaque

House hunting around Boston has got to be fun. Enjoy it! Selling the house, well, not as much.

I love old cemeteries, too. I can wander around them for hours. I checked out Ohio's oldest cemetery not too long ago but it's probably nowhere close in age to the one you visited.

Hi there... popping over via Swanneesinger. (I just had to investigate New England Living when I saw your comment post). I too am a California transplant to the east (Western New York to be exact). I absolutely fell in love with Boston on my first visit16 years ago. Ah... maybe someday I'll get there. Happy house hunting!

FASCINATED by this journey! Can't wait to find out what happens!!

(Where does your husband work? Does moving house also involve a job change?)

Alyson (New England Living) said...

Bee - Oh yes, it involves a job change. He's starting his own company. He's well-known in his industry for his sales seminars and training. So, he'll go into business for himself. He's starting that in the next month or two. That should be quite a journey in and of itself!

Good luck in finding your new home. Looks like we have a fair bit in common in that i love Boston, know Scuitate very well and lived in Duxbury and Plymouth for many years.

Best of luck in finding that special place for you and your family. Really enjoyed all your photography posts.
