One thing I knew I wanted way before my birthday was a family portrait painted by Heather from Audrey Eclectic. Ever since I found her blog, I've been a big fan of her art. It's very haunting and has a lovely primative, folk art feeling. It's so beautiful.
Several weeks before my birthday, I sent her lots of photos of us, including this one:

(Photo taken around Christmas time in our backyard)
I told her that I wanted a very New England feel to the background and she did an amazing job. Once she sent me the email with photos of the finished product, I was in love and was excited to have it in my grubby little hands immediately.
I was not disappointed when the lovely piece arrived. The kids couldn't stop staring at it. It's a lovely heirloom piece that they'll have to fight over when we're gone. ;)
I didn't know where I wanted to place it. I tried it over one of our fireplaces, but amongst the brick the painting didn't pop. It became lost in the all the brick. Well, I didn't want to put it on some random wall that didn't get much viewing. But, finally, I found the perfect place! It sits in our dining room, which is appropriate since we gather there most often as a family. It is also a high traffic room since we walk through it to go to so many other rooms.

Heather paints on wood. She does a collage on the wood and paints over it. It gives it such depth and interest.

I just adore the lighthouse! This scene is totally New England.

Look at the detail. She adds copies of old photos within the collage. So cool!
I also asked her to add an old church and graveyard since we (especially I) enjoy looking at old gravestones. I love the history of them.

Here's the church and graveyard, very tastefully done
I think that this was definitely the highlight of my birthday month. Something I will always treasure. Let's just say if my house were on fire and I knew everyone was safe, this would be one of the first things I would grab.
Go visit Heather on her blog. She has such beautiful things to look at.
For now, I'm onto my next birthday adventure...

Alyson, that is fabulous. I love the tiny, meaningful details. Isn't it wonderful finding all of these marvelous, creative people?
In other (much sadder) news, Braja has been in a bad car accident. I thought that you would want to know . . . and send her and her husband your prayers.
(Hugs)

Hi Alyson!~
So glad you like the painting, I'm honored its a 'grab in a fire' item, haha. The handle makes it ready to tote on escape ;)
When I found the photo of the old lady in the collage, I thought she looked like perfect sea captain's wife. that's why I put her in the water...where Im sure her heart often was.
Glad you all like it still! It looks great how you have it displayed!~

That is a very fantastic birthday gift! It is so unique and I love the collage behind---what a great idea.
I also am a visual artist---I paint floorcloths, but I haven't been in that "mode" for a few years....I go in and out of using my talents---this inspires me---I need to get painting again.
Maybe sometime between the theatre, blogging, voice lessons, and just general day to day mothering? What do you think?
heh, heh...

Hope all is well, I am so ready for the warmer weather.
Peace - Rene

Your older daughter sure does look just-like-YOU!

Very ccol. Of course, when you start out with a beautiful family, you get a beautiful outcome.
My husband and I would come out looking like Weebles. Beach Weebles. lol
Really fun portrait! The primitive style really fits the New England setting. Now I've learned we share a love of lighthouses too. I'm happy to hear you are making the most of the birthday month.
I posted the link you asked for in my comments.
That is lovely! You could continue this tradition for the next three years and there'd be a portrait for each child. :-)
Crash - Thank you! Your daughter is gorgeous and looks just like you too!
Binks - No way! You guys would look great.
Sarah - Oh yes, I love lighthouses! Even though there are lighthouses all over the country, I've always associated them with New England. I love to imagine those old sailing days on the New England coast. One of these days, I'll actually move to a New England coastal town!
Thanks for the link!
JAPRA - Good idea! I should get one every couple of years and the kids will look different and older in each and then they'd all get one after we're gone.
